Lex Arena | crafting a boardgame

In collaboration with a client who has become a dear friend, we brought to life Lex Arena, a historic tabletop strategy game that immerses players in the world of Roman gladiators. Each player takes on the role of a Lanista, guiding their fighters through challenges and opportunities presented by event cards, striving to leave at least one gladiator as the sole survivor in the arena.

From a designer’s perspective, the heart of Lex Arena lies in its tactile and visual experience. Every piece is meticulously handcrafted: wooden elements, beautifully printed cards, and a textile game board reminiscent of an ancient arena, creating a fully immersive encounter from box to table. Every detail, from the mechanics to the visual execution, was conceived to transport players into the grandeur and intensity of Rome’s legendary games.

The design work included:

• Branding and Identity: Naming, positioning, and development of a cohesive design program to reflect the historic and immersive nature of the game.
• Visual Identity: Typography, icon systems, monograms, and illustrated cards, all crafted to support a unified, historically inspired aesthetic.
• Packaging and Production: Meticulous research into materials and production methods, resulting in handcrafted wooden tokens, illustrated cards, and a textile game board.
• Editorial and Presentation Design: Instructional materials, rulebooks, and promotional assets designed with clarity and elegance.
• Digital Presence: Website design and promotion materials to present the game professionally and attractively online.

Each element was conceived with attention to detail and quality, creating an experience where aesthetics, materiality, and gameplay coexist seamlessly. Lex Arena demonstrates how a complete design approach, covering strategy, identity, production, and presentation, can transform a game into a tangible, immersive work of art.
